Can I use water from a retention pond to water my vegetable garden?
It’s actually a lake, but is now used as a retention pond. I’ve been watering my plants from the past few months with it and they seem to be thriving. I have tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, peas and eggplant. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea?

In a retention pond, I would worry about lawn chemical runoff, which can collect in these places. Flowers should do OK, but I wouldn’t want those chemicals in my veggies.
Retention ponds are usually built to catch overflow water from roads. This means it can contain motor oil and other things such as lawn chemicals that could be a health hazard when eaten.
Unless you are in a heavily industrial area, it should be plenty safe. Retention ponds are designed to intercept oils and any dissolved metals. Just don’t dry out the pond or it will become mosquito habitat because the predatory insects need permanent water to survive, bon apetite !!!!
